Hey, I’m Shania (she/her), but you can call me Shan! I have lived all over Canada and have recently returned to Nelson, where my husband and daughter were born.
After years of volunteering at women’s crisis centers, a degree in journalism with a focus in women’s political issues, and empowering women through art and cultural events, I found my way home to birth work in early 2019. Advocating for women and minority people will always be my first passion, and I believe that behind every confident birthing person, is someone that trusts their chosen birth team, feels educated and aware of their options, and feels confident with the decisions they make during pregnancy and postpartum.
I chose to complete my full spectrum doula training with Doula Trainings International (DTI) in 2019. I also completed the DONA birth doula training through Douglas College in 2019. I was then mentored by Jill Colpitts for my first 30 births in Vancouver throughout 2019 and 2020. I then completed my Childbirth Educator course, as well as my Abortion Doula training with Birthing Advocacy Doula Trainings (BADT) in 2021. I am also approved under the Doulas for Aboriginal Families Grant Program in BC. It is one of my goals to continue to push inclusivity amongst birthing spaces and practices by supporting and learning from organizations that focus on adjusting language used surrounding birth, and having mentors and educators that reflect inclusive birth practices.
I welcomed my first child in April 2022, and of course have gained an even stronger appreciation for the human body and mind. After taking pause to rest and reflect, I am coming back to this work with more clarity and understanding than I thought was possible. I began my journey as a full spectrum doula over 5 years ago. In this time I have helped more than 100 families bring their babies earthside or transition into the postpartum period with as much ease and pleasure as possible. Each one its own unique journey, each family adding more gratitude and abundance to my life. I still have lasting relationships with many of my clients and feel so blessed to have been allowed into such a special time in their lives.
